Error 800703fa Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion



Symptom

Collaboration Manager failed to create a workspace with "Error occured". Looking at the ULS logs you discover an error like:

Cause

This could be caused by an iisreset or service start/stop operation while the user profile service unloads the profile but couldn't succeed.


Solution

Restart the server and / or make sure the following Group Policy setting has been set at Machine/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/User Profiles

  • Do not forcefully unload the users registry at user logoff = Enabled
